Learning from research
At Antwerps Open Leercentrum vzw, research is not separate from our work. We collect and analyse data with one goal: making better pathways possible for young people — today, not just tomorrow. Our research always starts from practice and returns to it. What we measure, we use to adjust our approach.
What makes an A- certificat possible?
Together with the school, we study which factors make the difference between passing and dropping out. Not just school performance, but above all the context around it. We look, among other things, at learning delays and study methods, attendance and engagement, home situation and stability, and the guidance and network around the student. By systematically mapping these factors, we can flag more quickly where things risk going wrong — and step in in a more targeted way. Not the student as the problem, but the context as the lever.
Housing as a quiet, decisive factor
Together with Woonderwijs, we study an often underestimated link: the impact of housing quality on school outcomes. We start from a simple but confronting observation: housing that is too expensive and too small puts pressure on learning. We analyse how factors such as overcrowding, lack of study space, financial stress and frequent moves affect concentration, school careers and, ultimately, achieving results.
From insight to action
For us, research is not an endpoint. It is a tool. We use our insights to sharpen guidance pathways, support schools and partners in a targeted way, and feed policy choices with real-world data. Because whoever sees the right connections can also make different choices. At Athena Open Leercentrum vzw, we turn theory into concrete, positive change for young people.
